Our Make at Home Kits are cost effective ways of hand building and decorating multiple items such as a set of mugs, dinnerware, or sculpted forms, which would normally take four to six onsite pottery classes to complete. A 3 kg pack of clay will, for instance, make as many as 6 mugs. You get the opportunity to work around your schedule, over a period of time, yet have access to essential pottery services such as kiln firings and glazing. You can purchase, separately, with your Pottery Kit, our Sak Beh Pottery Set of Five Slips and also our set of water resistant MDF clay moulds for creating your own customised plates and bowls. The moulds are reusable, so once purchased will give you unlimited opportunities to add to your dinnerware collection.

The Make At Home Kits also allow you to mix and match onsite pottery classes with make at home options. The kits are great fun to share with a friend or as a creative idea for your event or party. 

You have access to our videos which are aimed at a wide range of skill levels, from beginners to advanced.  There will be a project for every stage of your growth.

All the glazing is in our studio white. However, we offer a range of coloured slips which can be painted onto your work at home. Our video tutorial (see sgraffito video) will take you through the process of the decorative technique, known as sgraffito, which involves painting and drawing into the clay at the leather hard stage (i.e. while it is still damp). Work that has been decorated with slips will be glazed in transparent. Please note that our Sak Beh Studio slips have been tested on our stoneware clay. However, slips purchased elsewhere may not be suitable for high fire stoneware. We suggest that you bear this in mind as the result, in such cases, may be disappointing. 

The kits can be dropped off at, or collected from, the studio on Monday or Friday evenings 5-7pm. Drop off and collection dates are listed on our Sak Beh Studio Website. 

Please bear in mind that you have a five month period within which to make and return your pieces to Sak Beh Pottery for firing and glazing. Mostly, potters return their work for firing within a month of purchase as the clay is in optimum condition for crafting at the time of purchase. Over time it begins to dry out. Please remember to return your work within this timeframe as beyond this point we cannot receive your work.

Once you have completed your amazing work, you can drop it off at our studio or have your own curriers deliver it for you. An important thing to bear in mind, when arranging your delivery to the pottery studio, is the careful packaging of your work to ensure it arrives intact. The pieces will be at their strongest in the leather hard stage (still slightly damp). Once fully dry, they are brittle (especially delicate, thin  items) and more vulnerable to breaking during transportation to the studio. If your items are very delicate, then it might be worth thinking about delivering them yourself or else wrapping them up very carefully and making sure they are still touch damp. Also, whilst the clay, from which your pot or creation is made, is still damp, please remember to  score your name (or first name and the first letter of your surname) onto the base together with the word P/Kit. This is to ensure that your work is identifiable as yours at collection. Unfortunately, there are instances when pots are claimed by potters who mistook them as theirs. So to ensure that we, and you too, can identify your pot, we need an identification mark. This is very important!

A final point to bear in mind is that this is a Basic Pottery Kit, however, if you would like to try your hand at a range of pottery techniques, but don’t have the tools at home to try them out, then our Extended Pottery Kit might be an idea. An extended pottery kit includes many additional tools such as clay rasp, rubber kidney, rolling pin, pottery guides, work cloths and pottery knife. The Extended Pottery Kit provides almost everything that you will probably need to make a high quality ceramic piece.

Sak Beh Studio Pottery was founded by Tessa Robinson, who lives and works in London. Her idea was to create a comfortable, homey place to work and be creative. Situated in a very busy and central location, just off Stoke Newington High Street, the studio is a drop of calm in a very fast moving world. 

Tessa trained in Fine Art, specialising in sculpture (modelling in clay). On completion of a three year Post Graduate Course at the Royal Academy of Arts, Tessa set up a studio in Hackney. The transition from sculptor to potter came many years later whilst doing doctoral research in Maya archaeology at UCL. Inspired by Maya ceramic art, and in particular the pots which combined sculpted and painted imagery, Tessa moved from research back to making. After attending courses in pottery and taking up a membership at a London pottery studio, she set up Sak Beh Pottery and is now a full-time potter and maker.

Tessa's works are informed by both her Fine Art training and her research into Ancient Maya ceramic art. The phrase 'Sak Beh' can be found on Ancient Maya monuments where it refers to the Milky Way as an ancestral path or road as well as the physical roads which connect people to places. In keeping with its namesake, Sak Beh Pottery is envisaged as a place for community interaction within the context of a creative journey.
